A spokesperson for Russian President, Vladimir Putin has said that Russia is ready to begin construction of the gas pipeline to run under the Black Sea.
Dmitry Peskov said the pipeline would go ahead assuming that the European Commission allows it to. Peskov stated that it would depend on how ‘predictable and constructive’ the commission planned to be.
The ‘South Stream’ project was abandoned last year following EU opposition. It was quickly replaced with ‘Turk Stream’, which itself crashed to a halt following the Turkish downing of a Russian fighter jet.
This is the third attempt at the South Stream project, with Gazprom already signing a memorandum with the Italian and Greek companies to deliver gas from a pipeline under the Black Sea.
Peskov was insistent that the project’s initial termination was nothing to with Russia.
