Money Released for Sofia Metro Extension

The Bulgarian government has transferred additional money to the city Municipality for an extension to the Sofia metro. 

A total of 15 million lev (€7.6 million) has been handed over as a contribution to the project which will lengthen Line 2.

The funds will be used to finance the supporting infrastructure and the underground digging of 950 metres for the extension of the line.

In addition, the money will also be used for the construction of a new metro station. Construction is expected to begin at some point this year.

Sofia Metro Future Plans

 

The Metro in the Bulgarian capital opened in 1998, with Line 2 opening ten years later in 2008.

The number of stations currently operating over the system is 34 linked with 38 km of track.

There are future plans to build an additional third line. The 16 km Line 3 is estimated to be completed in 2018.
